Scribal Classes Scribal Classes include:Geof Cathan Gold Leaf Techniques Introduction to gold leaf and gold leaf techniques Fee $5 Lillias MacGuffin Easy Tricks for Illuminated Detail Work Lecture with hands on practice. We will look at three period design elements commonly used for detailing illumination through out the middle ages, breaking them down into simple steps. If you have or can borrow basic paint supplies, please try and bring black, white, and one solid color, and a brush. I have some supplies to share. Lillias MacGuffin Application of Designs (Detail Work Part 2) Lecture. A more in-depth look at the applications of basic design elements to create a variety of detailwork effects. Suzanne Gabrielle Marie Beraud Making Paint From Pigment Students will study period materials and methodology for creating a water-based (tempera) paint, then make samples of paint to take home. Please wear clothing that can get messy. Aprons are a good idea! 2 Hour Class Fee $5 Druinne de Salesberie Beginning Calligraphy This class is for beginners. Will cover useful resources and tools. 2 Hour Class Natalia Auvert Scribal References References to help design and paint originals and charters, ranging from books to internet resources. Carletta da Nicolosi Bar Borders, Vines and Leaves A discussion of the Illuminated documents which used the bar borders, vines and leaves, as well as a study of the drawing techniques and colors used for these types of decoration. Handout provided. Rose Stewart Cathan Papers for Scribes Brief overview of papers available to scribes that are compatible with calligraphy and illumination, two separate and distinct arts. Fee $2 Thomas atte Woode The Insular Miniscule Script - How to Write like an Irish or English Monk A brief introduction to a scribal hand used throughout the British Isles up to around 1100 AD. Most frequenly associated with the Book of Kells and other Irish works, it was also used exensively by the English, especially when writing in the vernacular. The class will cover some Anglo-Saxon variants on the letterforms, and various scribal abbreviations and symbols. Students should bring pen, ink, and paper to practice the letters. Thomas atte Woode Cutting and Use of a Quill Pen Hands-on instuction in how to turn a feather into a writing instrument, and how to use it. Students should bring a good sharp knife Therasia von Tux How to draw Heraldic Art A class for anyone confronted with turning blazon (word descr) into emblazon (picture on shield) taught from the scribal perspective. Class include basics of how heraldic jargon translates into pictures, how the high gothic artistic paradigma dictates layout and symmetry on heraldic spaces like heaters, lozenges, banners, etc. (this is far less scary than it sounds) and how to draw heraldically even is you are unsure if you can even draw and why it really is easier than it looks! Handout included. 2 Hours Serena Lascelles Scroll Design: Charters and Originals (including Achievements) Don't be intimidated by scroll design! Come learn some simple tricks to translating period examples into beautiful works for the Society. Valuable tips for both original works (including achievement documents!) and designing for mass reproduction. Both SCA-type and historical scroll design will be covered. Students should bring note and sketch books Serena Lascelles Scribal Feedback Do you want to improve your scribal skills? Have you ever wanted one-on-one attention and feedback? For 10 minutes, work one-on-one with Serena on improving your calligraphy and/or illumination techniques. You'll show a recent piece, demonstrate your current techniques, and get tips for improvement based on what you show. This is not for people who think they're "good enough" and want to just be praised; it's for serious students who want constructive criticism to effect real improvement in their art. Students should bring usual scribal supplies and be prepared to demonstrate your current techniques, as well as bring a recent piece of scribal work 2 Hour Don Duncan Field Scribing A discussion of essential scribal tools needed in a travelling kit, helpful techniques for working in less than ideal conditions, and some stories of real life "scribal emergencies" and how the experts delt with them. Sara Penrose Simple Landscapes In this hands-on class, we will explore one technique for creating very simple landscapes that are appropriate for charter painting or original scrolls.
